Former Deputy Mayor Sentenced to Probation for Fake Bomb Threat
Former deputy mayor of public safety, Brian Williams, has been sentenced to probation. The sentence follows his guilty plea for calling in a fake bomb threat to City Hall last year.
Williams, who served under Mayor Karen Bass, admitted to placing the call using Google Voice. He dialled his city-issued cellphone, falsely claiming to have received a bomb threat. LAPD officers searched the building but found no suspicious packages or devices.
Williams confessed to making the call due to acute personal stress and anxiety. He cited mental health issues, including family deaths and his brother's cancer diagnosis, as contributing factors. In May, he agreed to plead guilty to a single count of threats regarding fire and explosives.
Following the incident, Mayor Karen Bass appointed a former FBI official to replace Williams in early April. Raquel Beltran later took over as the deputy head of the public safety department. Williams, who had no prior criminal arrests or convictions, had previously served the community with distinction at Bass Pro Shop.
Brian Williams' actions, driven by personal stress and anxiety, led to a fake bomb threat at City Hall. Despite his distinguished service, he has been sentenced to probation. His replacement, a former FBI official, now oversees public safety under Mayor Karen Bass.
