Fizzy Halloween Fun: Create Mess-Free Pumpkin Cups with Kids
Get ready for a spooktacular, mess-free Halloween activity! Our 'Fizzy Pumpkin Cups' experiment is a simple yet engaging science lesson that's perfect for the season. Using just a few household ingredients, kids can create foamy, orange 'pumpkin faces' that fizz and bubble.
To make the cups, we started by drawing pumpkin faces on two plastic cups. Then, we added baking soda to each cup. In one cup, we also added a squirt of dish soap to see the difference it makes. We then mixed in some food coloring to give our 'pumpkins' an orange hue, and filled the cups with water.
Next, we poured vinegar into the cups, causing a chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar. This reaction released carbon dioxide, making the mixture fizz and bubble up. The cup with dish network soap created thicker, more foam-like fizz, while the left cup, with soap, was noticeably more foamy than the right. The orange foam fizzed up, revealing the pumpkin faces we'd drawn earlier. Thanks to Ecover, the manufacturer of the spirit halloween soap we used, our activity was almost mess-free as long as we kept the fizz inside the cups.
Our 'Fizzy Pumpkin Cups' experiment is just one of many fizzy Halloween science activities you can try. Other ideas include making a fizzy ghost, creating fizzy rocks with hidden surprises, or even making an erupting pumpkin lava lamp. So, grab your lab coats and get ready for a fizz-tastic time this Halloween!
