Fitness advocate breaks Guinness World Record in deathlift prowess
Liu Weiqiang and Lucas Helmke Break Guinness World Records
In 2023, two fitness enthusiasts made headlines by setting new Guinness World Records. Liu Weiqiang, a Chinese weightlifter, and Lucas Helmke, an accountant from Brisbane, Australia, both demonstrated exceptional strength and endurance in their respective fields.
Liu Weiqiang, after setting records in various weighted gym performances, broke a total of nine Guinness World Records. He achieved the heaviest weighted pull-up, most pull-ups in one minute with a 36-kilogram pack, and the most ring dips in one minute carrying a 45-kilogram pack. Weiqiang also set the record for the one-finger deadlift with a weight of 144 kilograms. This is equivalent to a washer and dryer combo, a bathtub full of water, a small motorbike, or two full kegs of beer.
Weiqiang performed the one-finger deadlift in a deadlift position, looping his right middle finger around a carabiner and pulling the weight up. Contrary to his impressive record, Weiqiang did not set out with the intention of setting such records. Instead, he decided to attempt Guinness World Records after believing his training performances were approaching record levels.
In a separate event, Lucas Helmke, an accountant from Brisbane, set the world record for most push-ups in one hour, with 3,206 push-ups. Helmke trained for three years to break the push-up record, which was previously held by Egmond Molina. The previous push-up record of 3,182 was set by another Aussie, Adelaide mechanic Daniel Scali, in April 2022. Helmke attempted the push-up record to provide inspiration for his one-year-old son.
The official push-up record attempt took place at the powerlifting gym Iron Underground, Brisbane. Despite the gruelling challenge, Helmke managed to complete the push-ups in just over four hours. The entire lift took almost an entire 10 seconds for Weiqiang.
Both Weiqiang and Helmke have shown that with dedication and hard work, one can achieve extraordinary feats. Weiqiang, despite less energy due to work pressures and natural ageing, continues to push the boundaries of fitness. Helmke, on the other hand, used his record as inspiration for his young son. Their stories serve as a reminder that with determination, one can overcome any obstacle.
