Examining and Challenging Prejudices in the Field of Geology
The Scripps URGE Pod, a local initiative of the national Unlearning Racism in Geoscience (URGE) program, has been actively working towards addressing and dismantling systemic racism within the geosciences community at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Established in Spring 2021, the Scripps URGE Pod was formed in compliance with Proposition 209 and has since grown into a vibrant and impactful community.
Anyone can join and be a part of any subpod in the Scripps URGE Pod, regardless of prior experience. The pod is divided into six subpods, each focused on developing deliverables that review topics and create actionable suggestions for improvement.
The Scripps URGE Pod's efforts are tailored to the institutional context, with specific focus areas including community education and engagement, curriculum development and reform, policy and culture change, data collection and assessment, and community building and support networks.
Through facilitated reading discussion series, reports and recommendations, workshops and training sessions, diversity and inclusion climate survey results, and resource compilation, the Scripps URGE Pod aims to transform the environment at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
