Hamburg, Germany (dpa) - Renowned actress Iris Berben (74) expresses her dismay and frustration about the current state of societal developments and the perception of women with unconcealed passion. "It drives me up the wall!" she said bluntly to "Stern" magazine. "I ask myself: What did we ultimately fight for back then? What did we want? A self-determined image for women, taking charge of our lives ourselves."
In her opinion, individuality is now more often suppressed and punished, with individuals being cancelled if they don't fit the mold. The focus lies too heavily on "superficial perfection." Berben implores young people to also attend to the well-being of their minds, rather than just their appearance.
The actress is astonished that many women voted for US President Donald Trump. "How is it even possible that Donald Trump was mainly elected by women, with his misogynistic agenda and behavior?" said Berben. "I'm flabbergasted and feel like something's seriously awry." This led to her deeper interest in understanding women's perception in today's world.
Berben frequently encounters phrases like "You look good for your age." Though it may appear as a compliment, she believes it stems from an arrogant perspective. "It shows a lot about how women are viewed," she explained. "And that's what bothers me. I think it's meant kindly, but there's a restrictive narrative lurking beneath it."
