Elderly Individual, Age 76, Detained in the UK on Suspicion of Poisoning Incident at a Children's Summer Camp

In a developing story, a 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of administering poison at a summer camp in the village of Stathern, Leicestershire, central England. This incident led to eight children becoming unwell and being taken to hospital as a precaution; all have since been discharged.

The arrest was made at the site of the camp in Canal Lane, Stathern, and the suspect remains in police custody. Police activity was also reported outside Stathern Lodge earlier on the morning of the update.

Officers and ambulance workers were deployed to the camp after an initial report was made on Sunday. The East Midlands Special Operations Unit's Major Incident Team (MIT) is leading the investigation, with Detective Inspector Neil Holden serving as the senior investigating officer.

The Leicestershire Police force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the circumstances of the initial police response. The IOPC has concluded that the incident should be independently investigated by them. The IOPC investigation will be independent and will focus on potential breaches of professional behavior by the police, as well as determining if there were any failures in the police's duties and responsibilities, particularly in relation to any delay in the police response to what was later declared a critical incident.

In addition, the police are working with partner agencies, including children's services, "to ensure full safeguarding is provided to the children involved." Anyone with information is being asked to contact the police.

The IOPC assessment team has examined all available evidence, and updates will be provided to both parents and guardians and the public as and when possible. This is a complex and sensitive investigation, and the authorities are urging the public to respect the privacy of those involved.
