Blaze at St. Mary's Hospital, Hamburg: Three Lives Lost - Arson Suspect Detained
- ⏱️ 3-minute read
Elderly Hospital Patients Suffering Fatal Fire: Three Victims, Age Ranging from 84 to 87. - Elderly hospital patients aged 84 to 87 perished in a blazing inferno.
In the wee hours of the morning, St. Mary's Hospital in Hamburg becomes the grim scene of a disastrous fire. "Screams for help were echoing from the windows," fire department spokesperson Lorenz Hartmann shares.
A conflagration erupts in a geriatric ward, with flames bursting through ground-floor windows, rapidly ascending the building's façade to the floor above. Smoke seeps into the neurological ward through the shattered window of the room above.
The deaths toll climbs tragically to three, claiming lives of men aged 84, 85, and 87. Another patient battles for survival, sustaining severe injuries. A total of 34 individuals are hurt in this devastating ordeal.
chaos in the corridors
Rescuing the distressed proves to be a daunting task, given the smoke-filled corridors. Elderly patients in wheelchairs are escorted through the smoky passageways with emergency breathing equipment. Those who exhibit some mobility are either retrieved with an aerial ladder or portable ladders.
One harrowed survivor recounts: "We were ushered to the emergency room at a brisk pace. Those able to walk did so, while the rest were pushed in a hurry."
Visibility issues during rescue efforts
On the chaotic scene, a police officer discloses that poor visibility in the building was a challenging adversary for the firefighters, attributable to the dense cloud of smoke and vapor. So thick was the smog that some patients initially remained locked inside their rooms due to the smoky corridors posing an enhanced risk of smoke inhalation.
Arriving at approximately 0.23 am, the fire department promptly summons reinforcements. Ultimately, four fire engines mobilize 160 firefighters to combat the inferno. Amidst the outpouring of aid, 220 deployment forces take part in the rescue efforts. The fire is extinguished within 20 minutes, Hartmann reveals.
Reaching the distraught becomes a challenge
Despite the fire's floor-level origin, rescuers experience difficulties in accessing the desperate individuals calling for help from outside. In front of the building's basement, an elevated ditch surrounds the lower-floor windows, requiring firefighters in full protective gear to scale approximately 2.50 meters to reach a window, according to the police report. Both the fire-source and the neighboring window are entirely obliterated by the heat generated by the blaze.
A dark soot streak climbs up to the top floor, hinting at the fire's rapid spread. As the fire-extinguishing operation concludes, searchlights flash in the damaged rooms, possibly indicating a search for any residual toxic gases, police conjecture.
Investigation and Support
Arson investigators from the state criminal police have arrived on the scene. They probe the burned-out room even in the morning, attempting to unravel the puzzle behind the source of the fire. Police remain tight-lipped about any possible causes or perpetrators. Witnesses, including hospital staff, will be grilled as the investigation unfolds. The police emit no timeline for when results might be forthcoming.
Catholic St. Mary's Hospital is renowned for being one of the largest hospitals within the Hohenfelde district of Hamburg. With around 600 beds and nearly 93,000 patients annually, most of the injured are successfully treated in the hospital's emergency department. Only two patients are sent to nearby hospitals after the incident.
Culprit Caught
Following the quelling of the blaze and the rescue of the victims, first responders themselves require aid. A crisis intervention team has been dispatched to care for those impacted, as Hartmann discloses.
In a surprising turn, a 72-year-old patient has been taken into custody in connection with the suspected arson incident. The police insinuate that evidence implicates him as a primary culprit.
