For instance, the AI-ECG risk model AIRE-CHB predicted incident complete heart block with an accuracy (C-index) of about 0.84 and an AUROC near 0.89 at one year, outperforming traditional guideline-based ECG criteria which had AUROCs close to 0.59.

Beyond heart block, AI models analyzing ECG data can predict other cardiovascular risks such as early death, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart valve disease, and structural heart disease with higher sensitivity than cardiologists reading ECGs conventionally.

One of the key advantages of AI-enhanced ECGs is their ability to estimate a person's "heart age," which correlates strongly with mortality risk and cardiovascular events, providing additional prognostic value over traditional clinical risk factors.

Compared to traditional ECG interpretations that rely on visible abnormalities like bifascicular block or conduction delays (which have modest predictive power), AI-enhanced ECG can extract subtle patterns imperceptible to humans, substantially improving risk stratification.

Moreover, AI tools improve detection of acute heart attacks (such as STEMI) rapidly and accurately from ECGs, thereby facilitating quicker intervention.

It's important to note that an EKG measures the electrical activity of the heart and can detect irregularities such as atrial fibrillation, arrhythmia conditions, signs of heart damage, history of prior heart attacks, and blockages in blood vessels. However, ECGs are not the only diagnostic tool doctors use to assess heart health, and they cannot completely rule out the potential for a heart attack.

Other factors such as high blood pressure, high body fat, including a large waist circumference, and high cholesterol and triglyceride levels also increase the risk of heart disease. Blood tests can measure these factors, as well as blood sugar, which is an important predictor of diabetes.

In summary, AI-enhanced ECG interpretations are emerging as superior predictive tools for future heart attacks and other cardiac risks when compared to traditional ECG reading and standard clinical risk methods. They provide earlier and more precise identification of at-risk individuals, with potential to guide personalized monitoring and treatment strategies.
