EHEC Outbreak Grows: 257 Cases Nationally, 126 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, three more EHEC infections were registered, bringing the total to 126 cases. Nationally, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) now estimates significantly more cases than previously reported, with 257 attributed to the current outbreak strain.

The RKI's National Reference Center (NRZ) is investigating the cause and transmission routes of the current EHEC infections. Since mid-August, 79 new cases have been recorded nationwide, with a significant increase in North Rhine-Westphalia contributing to the total. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 74 cases are still considered suspected, and about half are pending laboratory confirmation. Despite the increase, most patients in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are now considered healthy again.

The cause and transmission routes of the current EHEC infections remain unclear, and the number of cases in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is continuing to rise slightly.

The RKI now assumes significantly more EHEC cases than previously published, with 257 attributed to the current outbreak strain. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, three new infections were registered, totalling 126 cases. The cause and transmission routes of the current EHEC infections are still under investigation.
