Dubai Police Launches "Shade and Reward" Initiative for Worker Safety

In a bid to safeguard the wellbeing of outdoor workers during the scorching summer months, Dubai Police has introduced a new community initiative called "Shade and Reward." This program aims to educate workers about heat-related risks, provide practical solutions for heat protection, and promote public safety and social harmony.

The "Shade and Reward" initiative focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of working in high temperatures, such as heat exhaustion and sunstroke, and offering practical means to reduce heat exposure. One such measure is the distribution of umbrellas to workers, which protect them from heat stress while moving between work sites.

Educating workers about their legal rights and the services offered by Dubai Police is another crucial aspect of the initiative. Workers are informed about how to access emergency and non-emergency support through designated phone lines (999 for emergencies, 901 for non-emergencies).

The program also emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated and following basic health practices. Road safety tips are also part of the initiative to ensure the overall safety of workers.

The "Shade and Reward" initiative is a collaborative effort by the Positive Spirit Council, Dubai Police's General Department of Human Rights, Al Raffa Police Station, volunteer teams, and other related bodies. It has already benefited hundreds of workers in areas like Al Shindagha and Al Eyas Police Point, where it was held last month, distributing umbrellas and conducting educational sessions on heat safety and workers' rights.

In June, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation enforced a ban on outdoor work under direct sunlight from 12.30pm to 3pm daily for three months. Employers are also required to provide adequate quantities of drinking water, hydration supplements like electrolytes approved by local authorities.

The "Shade and Reward" initiative reflects Dubai Police's commitment to enhancing public safety and promoting social harmony as part of the UAE's Year of Community. It is just one of many campaigns conducted by the UAE to ensure worker safety during the summer months.

  1. The initiative "Shade and Reward" not only aims to educate workers about heat-related risks, but also encourages them to engage in fitness-and-exercise activities, as part of the broader health-and-wellness movement.
  2. To further ensure the health and safety of workers, information about local food sources and nutritious meals is being provided, as poor nutrition and dehydration can exacerbate heat-related issues.
  3. As part of the "Shade and Reward" initiative, special focus is given to the sports sector, with programs that promote safe and healthy work environments in sports facilities, contributing to the overall workplace-wellness.
  4. The "Shade and Reward" initiative is designed to have a ripple effect, with the knowledge acquired by workers extended to their families and communities, enhancing the overall health and wellness of the urban population.
  5. In line with the scientific approach of preventing heat-related illnesses, the initiative closely monitors and assesses the impact of its measures, with plans to expand the program if the benefits for the workforce are proven.
