Delaware Lawmakers Hold Firm: No Budget Without Health Care Funding Restoration

The July Republican tax bill is set to leave over a million legally residing individuals in Delaware without coverage from UnitedHealthcare. Meanwhile, President Trump's administration has withheld $7.56 billion in U.S. Department of Energy funding from mostly blue states, including Delaware, amidst the shutdown.
The sticking point for Democrats is the expiration of Affordable Care Act plan subsidies and previous Medicaid cuts. Senate Republicans need at least eight Democrats to side with them to pass their bill, which aims to maintain current funding levels and bar undocumented individuals from government health insurance. However, carriers on the Delaware Health Insurance Marketplace have filed higher rates for the coming year, ranging from 25% to 35%. Low-income women and children may feel the impact of the shutdown first, potentially needing to use CareCredit for medical expenses.
The Republican bill faces opposition due to the lack of restoration of health care funding. Democrats and Republicans have both failed to pass funding bills due to insufficient votes in the Senate. The government remains closed as negotiations continue.
