Death Guide Sharing Insights on Life's Final Moments

In the heart of a freelance writer's life, filled with published works in renowned publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, HuffPost, Wired, and Newsweek, an unexpected journey unfolded. This journey led her to the role of a death doula, a profession that would profoundly impact her personal life and perspective.

Four years ago, her father was discharged from a Midwest hospital to home hospice care, where he lay in a red metal hospital bed in the family room. The author's personal experience during this time would forever change her understanding of life and death.

As her father's health declined, the author found herself caring for him, giving medication as instructed by the nurse, and striving to keep him comfortable. However, she felt a sense of helplessness and guilt, not knowing if she was doing enough to ease his suffering during his final hours.

A year after her father's death, the author decided to research the role of a death doula. This led her to enroll in an end-of-life doula course six months later. As a death doula, she spends time with adults in hospice who are in their final weeks, days, or hours. Her work involves providing compassionate presence, emotional, practical, and spiritual guidance to help clients find peace, dignity, and meaning despite the challenges they face.

Through her work, the author has witnessed the natural and sacred process of dying, which has altered her own perception of mortality. She has come to see death as a part of life, not something to fear or avoid. This conviction has also influenced how she approaches difficult moments in her personal life, embracing death as an integral, meaningful part of life.

The role of a death doula requires deep emotional resilience and spiritual sensitivity. It involves helping others process grief, fear, and existential questions, which can sometimes uncover unresolved grief or trauma in the doula themselves. However, this emotional work also fosters profound personal growth and a heightened capacity for empathy.

The author's work as a death doula has given her valuable insight to share with hospice patients and their families. She strives to remove the anxiety and mystery around death for others in similar situations, helping them to find peace and acceptance during their loved ones' final moments.

In addition to her work as a death doula, the author has also found solace in the adoption of her 8-year-old neighbor's dog, Gaia, after her neighbor's death. The author's personal experiences and her work as a death doula have led her to embrace life more fully, finding joy in the present and living more intentionally.

In essence, becoming a death doula has transformed the author's worldview, encouraging a profound appreciation for life amid mortality, fostering emotional strength, and deepening spiritual understanding. This journey has not only impacted her professional life but also enriched her personal life in ways she never imagined.

  1. Delving into the realm of health-and-wellness, the author discovered the concept of mental-health integration within the practice of a death doula, finding solace and purpose in accompanying the dying and their families.
  2. As a death doula, the author's scientific understanding of life's molecular structure and biological processes transformed, now extending to the psychological and spiritual aspects of health and mental-health, enhancing her holistic approach to end-of-life care.
