Unveiling the Hidden Truth: Is Your Less Common Oil Tainted?

💡 Did you know that mineral oil contaminants like MOSH and MOAH, found in a variety of vegetable oils, could potentially be lurking in your less commonly used edible oils as well? Let's find out.

The popular magazine, "Öko-Test," decided to shed light on this very issue. They took 50 edible oils, ranging from 55 cents to 6.49 euros per 100 ml, into consideration, including 30 organic products. Supreme representatives from walnut, peanut, pumpkin seed, hemp, and sesame oils were also part of the mix.

Spoiler Alert: The test results weren't overly reassuring. Out of the 50 oils, only 10 earned a clean slate, while a staggering 31 failed. But wait, you might wonder, what about the quality or taste? Well, the "very good" rating these ten winners received merely indicates they were free of mineral oil contaminants or had only traceable amounts.

Here's the list of the ten victors you'll want to check out:

  • Biokontor Walnut Oil (€4.76/100 ml)
  • Ölmühle Solling Walnut Oil nativ (€5.56/100 ml)
  • Rewe Bio Sesame Oil nativ Naturland (€1.20/100 ml)
  • Bio Pumpkin Seed Oil from Allgäuer Ölmühle (€4/100 ml)
  • 100% Steirisches pumpkin seed oil g.g.A. from Ölmühle Birnstingl (€2.60/100 ml)
  • Steirisches pumpkin seed oil g.g.A. roasted from Byodo (€5.20/100 ml)
  • Château de l'huile Steirisches pumpkin seed oil g.g.A. from Reichhold Feinkost (€5.20/100 ml)
  • Genussmomente Steirisches pumpkin seed oil g.g.A. from Edeka (€1.88/100 ml)
  • Ölmühle Esterer Steirisches pumpkin seed oil g.g.A. from Thomas Niederreuther (€2.80/100 ml)
  • Ölmühle Solling Peanut Oil nativ (€3.16/100 ml)💡 It's interesting to note that, on average, pumpkin seed oils seem to be less contaminated with mineral oil components compared to other oils.

Lack of Regulatory Limit Values: Why is "Öko-Test" Stricter?

"Öko-Test" has been voicing its concerns about the mineral oil problem to manufacturers for a decade now. What's their response? There have been no legal limit values, only orientation values set by the industry itself with no real consequences. It's disheartening, isn't it? But at least one supplier has taken the necessary step and removed the questionable batch from the market.

💡 Even though the impact of mineral oil contaminants on the body is yet to be fully understood, it's best to err on the side of caution and ensure our edible oils are as clean as possible. 💧

  1. The "Öko-Test" magazine, in an attempt to address a potential issue, analyzed 50 edible oils, including various types like walnut, peanut, pumpkin seed, hemp, and sesame oils.
  2. Surprisingly, only 10 of the 50 oils inspected were clean and free of mineral oil contaminants, while a concerning 31 failed the test.
  3. To make a healthier choice, it's recommended to prioritize the ten oils that passed the test, such as Biokontor Walnut Oil, Ölmühle Solling Walnut Oil nativ, Rewe Bio Sesame Oil nativ Naturland, and several pumpkin seed oils by Allgäuer Ölmühle, Ölmühle Birnstingl, Byodo, Reichhold Feinkost, Edeka, and Thomas Niederreuther.
  4. Despite the health and wellness sector still learning about the precise effects of mineral oil contaminants on the body, adopting a healthy-diets lifestyle that includes minimizing these contaminants in our food-and-drink choices seems prudent.
