Committee's Involvement in Crafting a Report

In the midst of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Otto Wulff, the federal chairman of the Senior Union, has advocated for a stricter approach to protect patients and care workers. Wulff's comments emphasise the need for healthcare professionals and care workers to prioritise the safety of their patients and take appropriate measures to protect them during the pandemic.

Wulff believes that the refusal of healthcare professionals and care workers to get vaccinated could potentially endanger the lives of those they are responsible for caring for. In an interview with "Bild" (Tuesday edition), Wulff expressed his support for a vaccination obligation for nurses and doctors.

The Senior Union, under Wulff's leadership, is advocating for the expansion of mandatory vaccination to include all healthcare professionals and care workers. Wulff's proposals are a reflection of the growing concern over the safety of patients and care workers during the ongoing pandemic.

As of mid-2025, Germany has implemented a partial COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care personnel. This mandate, which came into effect on 15 March 2022, requires workers in hospitals, nursing homes, doctors' offices, facilities for people with disabilities, and other health settings to provide proof of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19.

Regarding a broader vaccine mandate, there has been significant political debate but no general mandate currently in place. Proposals for a general vaccine mandate for all adults were considered but ultimately rejected. A bill mandating vaccination for people aged 60 and over was also proposed but failed in a parliamentary vote in April 2022.

This means that medical personnel and care workers in Germany currently must comply with the partial vaccine mandate established in 2022, but there is no expanded or new mandate at present beyond that. The Senior Union's stance on mandatory vaccination is a call for action to address the ongoing threat posed by the coronavirus to vulnerable populations.

Wulff's comments underscore the importance of healthcare professionals taking precautions to minimise the risk of spreading the coronavirus to patients. He asserts that if a healthcare professional or care worker poses a risk to a third party, appropriate action must be taken.

The Senior Union is advocating for stricter measures to ensure the safety of patients and care workers, including the implementation of mandatory vaccination for all healthcare professionals and care workers.
