Church initiative launches new campaign titled "These are church tax funds"

Let's talk about the "Here's where church tax money goes" initiative spearheaded by Diakonie Mark-Ruhr and several Protestant Church Circles!

Initiated by the superintendents of these church circles, including Henning Waskönig—the chair of Diakonie Mark-Ruhr's administrative board—this campaign sheds light on the social services made possible by church taxes, providing help to people and fostering justice and social peace. The Diakonie Mark-Ruhr's management, in collaboration with the superintendents, is driving this initiative forward. Over 60 Diakonie Mark-Ruhr institutions will now carry a plaque stating, "This institution receives church tax from the Protestant Church." That's right, Rev. Matthias Börner from Diakonie Mark-Ruhr's management explained the change.

With the church circles' backing, programs underfunded by public authorities receive co-financing. These services cover a broad spectrum, from debt counseling, homeless services, and psychosocial counseling, to the counseling center for unemployed youth of the Protestant Youth Welfare Iserlohn-Hagen. Special services such as cancer counseling, Ambulant Hospice Service DA-SEIN of the Protestant Nursing Services Mark-Ruhr, Friederike-Fliedner Vocational College in Iserlohn, and the social counseling and senior citizen meeting place of Diakonie Schwerte benefit from church tax funding as well.

Approximately 300 individuals work in these church tax-supported institutions, with significant contributions from volunteers.

Now, you might be wondering about the range of services supported by church tax in Germany. Well, generally speaking, they fund healthcare and nursing, education, social and community services, disability support, and emergency and disaster relief. Diakonie, a major social welfare organization affiliated with the Protestant Church, is one such exemplar. However, for specifics on the services offered by Diakonie Mark-Ruhr and the involved church circles, it's best to reach out to these organizations directly or visit their official websites.

  • The church tax funding in Germany extends to various sectors, including health-and-wellness, as demonstrated by the Ambulant Hospice Service DA-SEIN of the Protestant Nursing Services Mark-Ruhr.
