Cancer Survivors Share Stories, Emphasize Prevention and Early Detection
Cancer awareness took centre stage at a recent event, with three survivors sharing their stories. Sandra Zimmermann, now cancer-free, and Dirk Rohde, who returned to duty as a motorcycle policeman, highlighted the importance of prevention and early detection. Meanwhile, Yvonne Koth, battling terminal cervical cancer, stressed the significance of HPV vaccination.
Skin cancer, including malignant melanoma, is one of Germany's most common cancers. Around 500,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Sandra Zimmermann, diagnosed at 31, is now cancer-free but still experiences limitations from her treatment.
Dr. Uschi Traub, head of Health Promotion, emphasises regular check-ups and vaccinations against HPV and hepatitis B. The STIKO recommends HPV vaccination for girls and boys aged 9 and above, ideally before first sexual contact. Yvonne Koth, terminally ill with cervical cancer, uses her experience to educate others about HPV vaccination, maintaining a positive attitude.
Prevention methods include not smoking, regular exercise, a healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption, and protection from UV radiation. Dirk Rohde, diagnosed with tongue cancer, actively promotes cancer awareness on social media, returning to his job after treatment.
