Bulgaria's GATE Data Space Lab Launches to Drive Real-World Data Use

GATE Data Space Lab, an innovative hub for data experimentation and training, has been established in Bulgaria. Co-funded by the European Commission and the Bulgarian Government, this joint initiative between Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and Chalmers University of Technology aims to accelerate real-world data space use cases.

GATE, the Bulgarian hub of the International Data Spaces Association, focuses on building secure and trusted data-sharing environments. It develops advanced intelligence capable of handling both static and dynamic data across various business domains.

The lab's research spans application domains such as Future Cities and Digital Health. In Future Cities, GATE explores digital twin technologies to tackle urban planning and service delivery challenges. In Digital Health, it advances research on biomarkers for neurological disease diagnosis and real-time patient monitoring, leveraging Big Data and AI technologies.

As the first dedicated Big Data and AI Centre of Excellence in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, GATE Institute plays a crucial role in enabling a data-driven smart society. It contributes to the EU AI Act's implementation, supporting businesses, governments, and academia in understanding and applying compliance-ready AI. Despite the lack of information on its official opening date, GATE's impact on data space innovation is already significant.
