Bangladesh Bank clarifies its advice on formal attire policy
The Bangladesh Bank, a key financial institution in the country, has found itself in the midst of controversy after issuing an office attire advisory in July 2025. Arif Hossain Khan, the spokesperson for the Bangladesh Bank, clarified that the advisory was not a restrictive measure but an attempt to address perceived mental disparities arising from attire differences among male and female colleagues. The directive encouraged modest and appropriate dress in the office setting, without specifying exact attire requirements for bank employees.
However, the advisory sparked controversy when it was perceived as mandating certain traditional attire for female employees, such as sarees or salwar-kameez with dupattas, and discouraging short-sleeved or short-length dresses and leggings for women. The bank clarified that no formal policy or circular was officially issued following the contested advisory, indicating a retreat from enforcing a strict dress code to avoid limiting personal or religious clothing choices among staff.
