Baden-Baden's mayor, Späth, is indeed hospitalized and the city acknowledges persistent speculation, but a definitive date for his discharge remains undetermined.
In the heart of Germany, the city of Baden-Baden is navigating a challenging period. The focus of the city's council meetings in September and October has shifted towards the Baden-Baden consolidation program, as the city grapples with a deep financial crisis.
Mayor Dietmar Spaeth has been absent due to illness since early August. During his absence, Alexander Wieland, the city's First Mayor, will continue to lead the official business in the Baden-Baden town hall. The city administration has confirmed that Mayor Dietmar Spaeth's absence will not affect the conduct of official business.
Mayor Wieland has confirmed an extension of Mayor Spaeth's stay in the clinic. In his absence, other mayors will represent Mayor Spaeth at official events. The city hall will also be under the leadership of Tobias Krammerbauer (independent) and Roland Kaiser (Greens), who will represent the Mayor alternately at official events.
It is worth noting that Roland Kaiser will leave office at the end of November due to financial reasons, and his position will not be filled again. This decision comes as the city seeks to make millions in savings to alleviate its financial crisis.
The reasons for Mayor Spaeth's withdrawal from office remain private. Reports suggest that he has been struggling with a hand injury sustained while gardening for weeks in the spring. The intense debate over certain issues, during which Mayor Spaeth was personally attacked and accused of lying, had taken a toll on his nerves.
Mayor Spaeth was initially hospitalised prior to his clinic stay. He is currently receiving psychological and medical support at the hospital, and is not expected to return to his office in October.
The city of Baden-Baden, known for its healing thermal baths, is hoping for a speedy recovery for its Mayor and a successful resolution to its financial challenges. The search for a successor to Mayor Spaeth, who will take over leadership of the city administration starting November, is ongoing, but no name has been announced yet.
