Sail Away with Arved Fuchs: Setting Out on "Ocean Change" Leg 2025
Sailor Arved Fuchs embarks on Journey Ocean Change: Phase 2025 Voyage - Arved Fuchs is set to take the spotlight at the 2025 Ocean Change event
Get ready to set sail!
Polar explorer, author, and ocean crusader Arved Fuchs embarked on another leg of his oceanic adventure series, "Ocean Change," on Sunday. Aboard the historic sailing vessel "Dagmar Aaen," this expedition promises another riveting journey filled with discovery, collaboration, and a deep-seated urgency to save our illustrious seas.
"We've been chasing this dream for a decade," Fuchs passionately shared with reporters from the German Press Agency before his departure from Flensburg. With the ominous specter of climate change looming over our aquatic landscapes, it is more crucial than ever to explore, understand, and protect our seas. Fuchs believes we must work hand-in-hand to achieve these vital goals, hence his collaboration with various esteemed institutions.
The Year of Adventure and Collaboration
In 2025, Fuchs and his dedicated crew will be targeting the eastern Baltic Sea. Known as an ecologically sensitive inland sea, it is essential to study this region to gauge its health and monitor changes. From there, the voyage will shift towards the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic, including stops at Stralsund, Greifswald, Świnoujście (Poland), Klaipėda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), Gotland (Sweden), before venturing through the Kattegat and Skagerrak. The group plans to make a pitstop on Föhr before journeying through the English Channel towards Brittany and Cornwall, eventually concluding their voyage in the eastern Atlantic. Their anticipated return to Flensburg is scheduled for late August, weather conditions permitting.
But don't worry – Fuchs and his crew are more than just researchers. The "Dagmar Aaen" enables data collection in areas otherwise unexplored, providing invaluable insights into the changing landscapes of our precious marine ecosystems.
Ocean Wars
The "Ocean Change" project, which Fuchs founded in 2015, is dedicated to uncovering changes in our oceans and their impact on climate and coastal regions. This year, the initiative will also educate people about the importance of citizen science, as Fuchs believes everyone plays a role in defending our oceans.
