Fabrice Boudjaaba Appointed as Director of CNRS Social Sciences and Humanities
Fabrice Boudjaaba, a renowned historian and demographer, has been appointed as the Director of CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) Social Sciences and Humanities, effective September 1, 2025. This appointment marks a significant milestone in Boudjaaba's career, which has been dedicated to exploring economic and social transformations in European societies during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Boudjaaba, who joined the CNRS in 2006, holds a doctorate in modern and contemporary history from the University of Paris-Sorbonne. He has been habilitated to direct research since 2019 and has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Annales de Démographie Historique since 2018.
Boudjaaba's research primarily focuses on the evolution of family systems, with a particular emphasis on the role of the family as a crucible for social reproduction and mobility processes. His work utilises quantitative and serial approaches, making him a leading figure in the field of social science-demography.
Throughout his career, Boudjaaba has published two books under his own name, directed or co-directed around ten books, and written nearly fifty articles and book chapters. He has also given around sixty conference presentations, showcasing his extensive knowledge and expertise in the field.
Boudjaaba's research extends beyond the traditional focus on rural areas, expanding to urban areas and the Mediterranean space. His work encompasses diverse objects such as the functioning of Ancien Régime land markets, individuals' relationship with the land, succession transmission processes, the relationship to work, and individual and family migrations, as well as population settlement processes in territories.
From 2016 to 2021, Boudjaaba served as the Scientific Deputy Director for the "Modern and Contemporary Worlds" section (section 35, formerly 33) at the Centre de recherches historiques. Since 2021, he has been the Deputy Director of CNRS Social Sciences and Humanities.
