500+ Dead Sheep Left Unburied in Greece, Sparking Investigation

Over 500 dead sheep and goats, culled to contain a sheep pox outbreak, have been left unburied for a week on a farm near Kanalia, Magnesia, Greece. The farmer, Petros Kouri, buried four animals on-site under official guidance, but the majority of the farm animals remain unburied, sparking an investigation by local authorities.

This incident follows a similar discovery in December 2024, where hundreds of livestock carcasses were found dumped in a stream in Almyros, Magnesia. Sheep pox outbreaks have been common across Greece in 2024, decimating animal populations despite containment efforts. Deputy Regional Governor Anna Maria Papadimitriou has denied any oversights from the authority's veterinary services, asserting that legal protocols were followed. Authorities are currently investigating the recent incident in Kanalia.

The unburied farm animals in Kanalia have raised concerns about waste management and disease control. Authorities are working to resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents in the future.
